Mark Lightcap began working for Mike Kelley Studio in 2005 and was the head of fabrication until it closed in 2013. Lightcap discusses the process behind Kandors (2007-11), an extraordinary series of miniature cities included in the late artist's retrospective exhibition.
Kelley's Kandors are scaled-down representations of the fictional capital of Krypton, Superman's home planet. Kelley analyzed versions of Kandor rendered by different artists throughout the long history of the DC Comics serial, and constructed three-dimensional models that duplicate the size and detail of the diverse stylizations found in different episodes.
Lightcap recalls a studio process that was empirical, experimental and labor-intensive. Built by hand, the cityscapes were fabricated with colorful and attractive resin, carved styrofoam and miscellaneous objects found in the studio. Early versions of the sculptures required plutonium. In order to achieve the high finish quality, many of the sculptures were polished for hundreds of hours, creating an otherworldly aura.
"At their best, they defy scale," says Lightcap. "You look at it, and it looks like giant miniatures."
